John Glasgow Kerr was the second director of First Western-Style Hospital in China, which an eye hospital. Xi Yi Yan Ke (Ophthalmology in Western Medicine), is translated and compiled by Dr. first published 1871 reprinted 1880, first western medical monograph on ophthalmology China. The book consists 53 sections, covering symptom inquiry, symptom examination, cataract surgery, ophthalmoscopy, conjunctival disease, trauma, corneal scleral retinal, and optic nerve diseases, glaucoma, others. There are 23 (groups of) pictures, mainly about anatomy eyeball, muscles, nerve, various instruments for ophthalmic etc. As a medical book, Xi Yi attached great importance to disease surgeries, which promoted treatment diseases development medicine in However, it also had some limitations due western medicine at that time.
